One hasty decision alters the course of his perfect life forever.。愛宕神社の境内、狂四郎は赤座軍兵衛と名乗る侍の手から老人を救った。一向に風采のあがらないその老人が朝比奈という勘定奉行の職にある男と聞いて狂四郎は興味を唆られた。狂四郎の耳には幾つかの興味ある事実が入った。家斉の息女高姫は堀家に嫁ぎながら、早くから夫を失い奔放で驕慢な生活をしていること、そして、用人主膳は札差、米問屋などに賄賂とひきかえに朝比奈の抹殺を約していること。又赤座も朝比奈を狙っていること。等々。ある日、遊楽帰りの高姫に出会った狂四郎は、主膳が手練の殺人者をくり出す事を知りながら、小気味よいいたずらっけを楽しんでいた。よりすぐりの殺人者が揃った。赤座、増子、榊原、海老名それに、キリスト教の布教に囚われている夫を救うため、主膳の膝下にある采女が加わっていた。動機も武術も異る五人は、狂四郎の身辺に危害を加えようと立ち廻った。ある日狂四郎の前にあら...。
